A Little Catalonia Love

We thought that Barcelona was a city in Spain.  We were wrong.  Many of the locals think Barcelona is in Catalonia.  In fact, while we were visiting it was during Le Merce which is a festival to celebrate Catalonia history and culture.  There is also a strong effort to become an independent European Union country.  Of course they're asking for a $5 billion Euro loan to get this all started.  Or something like that.  We're not sure we have all the facts and details.

Sardana is a national dance, which they do every Sunday afternoon and sometimes on Saturday, in the cathedral square.  The dancing begins at the same time, same day.  The dance is performed in a circle, similar to the Jewish dance that most are familiar with seeing at celebrations.  They are VERY serious about this dance.

A group arrives, throws all their stuff in the middle, and then start dancing.....
They have special shoes too. An espadrille with ties similar to ballet slippers.  The men and women wear the same style of shoe.
The dance is very slow, with very specific steps and sequence...again, VERY serious stuff.
